International Women's Day, Unleashing the Super Powers of Tomorrow's Women

International Women's Day, Unleashing the Super Powers of Tomorrow's Women

5 minute read

Happy International Women's Day!

Being a brand dedicated to girls and run by a host of feisty women; this day of celebration is incredibly important to us. We're all about empowering our angels, giving them the confidence to face the world and make an impact.

We like to think our Angel’s Face garments allow our girls to unleash their super-powers; never underestimate anyone who wears shades of pink, it only disguises how fearless they are!

Keely Deininger - Angel's Face Founder & Designer

We asked Keely a few questions about how she sees International Women's Day, with our brand and also in the context of the world of fashion.

How do you celebrate and empower women at Angel's Face on International Women's Day?

I try to empower the people around me every day, not just on International Women's Day.

It's a good lesson to learn early on in your career that you are only as strong as the team around you.  If that means telling people a few home truths about their performance then so be it.  I am known to be fairly tough to work for. I demand your best every day, not just the days you want to turn up.

People realise that if they put themselves forward for things they generally get it. I have no time for people who want to do the bare minimum. In fact, I am very encouraging for the people who work with me to have a side hustle, it shows that they want more in life and are prepared to take risks.

What messages do you aim to send to young girls through Angel’s Face and our collections?

What we wear does empower how we feel,  we all know when we are wearing something that we love we feel good about ourselves.  The ethos of the brand is that you wear what you think looks good, we are not dictating fashion looks. We want our fans to put their own looks together and be proud individuals.

How do you support women entrepreneurs?

I mentor lots of people of all different ages. Some are just starting out that don’t know what they want to do, and others are beginning new ventures that are a far cry away from what they have been doing.  I ask those difficult questions that your daydreams don’t ask.  What is the plan, not the dream, what is the actual plan? How are you going to tackle this mountain that you are about to climb?  Who is going to do the work?

The new Entrepreneur’s world is very different from the world they are leaving.  It’s a lonely place, so my door is always open if there are any questions or if they need some help solving issues. Often a problem shared is a problem solved.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing women in the fashion industry, and what can be done about this?

The bulk of the fashion industry is run by suits ( the men with the money); in 38 years of being in the industry, this has not changed. I was lucky to work with a brilliant man who really cared about the quality of the garments we made. He was never about making a quick buck, it is from him that I learnt everything. So it's about finding the people who fit with your own values.

I try to work with factories that are owned by females where possible.  I find that they understand the quality of what we are making more, and they are never trying to shave off a few pennies.  I have never sought investment for my company as I wanted to be in control of my brand, this is really important to me.

What advice would you give to other women entrepreneurs who are just starting out in the fashion industry?

Make an effort to meet other people in all industries not just the fashion industry,  networking is a major part of being an entrepreneur. You never who you might meet and who they may connect you to. It's very important to give back, there have been many times that I have been able to help someone who has helped me over the years.  I have been very lucky to have always loved the industry that I am in, so it has come easy for me to navigate my career.

People are drawn to people who are passionate about what they do. So get out there and start your own story!
